From the MIE archive · Company announcement: 10 September 2026 · Website archive version added: 19 October 2026.

Tata Steel announced on 10 September 2026 that it had commissioned coke-oven-gas injection at Blast Furnace 1 of its Meramandali works in Odisha. The company describes it as the first installation of its kind in India.

The system introduces gas generated during cokemaking into the blast furnace as a reductant, substituting part of the external fossil-fuel requirement. Tata Steel names Paul Wurth-SMS as technology partner and Kobelco as equipment supplier.

Why it matters

The development concerns operating technology at an existing steelworks, rather than an announced increase in steelmaking capacity. Reusing a process gas can improve resource efficiency; the release does not provide measured unit-level emissions reductions or financial savings.

What comes next

Operating data will determine the extent of fuel substitution and the commercial benefit. MIE will distinguish those results from the expected benefits described at commissioning.
