What happened

Essar announced contracts for five coal-bed methane blocks across West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh and Telangana on 15 October. Two are in the Raniganj region, extending its stated local footprint from about 500 sq km to 830 sq km. The five-block package covers 1,281 sq km across the three states.

Why it matters

The award expands the company’s exploration and development position in an established eastern Indian gas basin. Additional acreage is not the same as recoverable reserves or additional gas already available to industrial customers.

What to watch next

Exploration results, development plans, statutory clearances and subsequent production disclosures will determine how much of the new acreage becomes a supply asset.

Source and verification

Acreage figures are company-reported. This announcement does not establish a production start date or commercially recoverable reserves.
