Oil India has reported a natural-gas discovery at its Godavari-1 appraisal well in the shallow offshore Krishna–Godavari Basin. Its 23 October 2026 exchange filing identifies the previously unappraised Matsyapuri formation in block KG-DSF/GSKW/2018.

Testing began on 16 October. The company reported gas flow of about 100,000 standard cubic metres a day, reaching a maximum of 200,000 during continuous testing, alongside condensate of approximately 170 barrels a day. These are well-test results, not a forecast of sustained commercial supply.

Oil India is the block’s sole operator. The tested interval lies at a depth of 2,024–2,027 metres. The disclosure says preparations were underway to test the next higher zone.

What the discovery establishes

The result provides evidence of hydrocarbons flowing from a tested zone. It gives Oil India another formation to evaluate within an existing offshore block.

For an enterprise with longstanding operating roots in Assam, the development also illustrates exploration beyond its northeastern production base. The discovery itself is offshore in the KG Basin; it is not an Assam gas find.

The commercial questions remain open

A peak test rate does not establish recoverable reserves, a field’s productive life or the gas volumes customers could receive. The filing gives no reserve estimate, development budget or commercial-production start date.

The next useful disclosures would cover testing of the higher zone, appraisal conclusions and any development decision. Infrastructure, delivery arrangements and sustained production would need separate evidence before the discovery could be described as a new source of commercial supply.
