JSW Utkal orders sinter plant as Odisha steel project advances procurement

SMS group’s equipment package marks a specific procurement step at Paradip. It does not establish operating steel capacity.

JSW Utkal Steel has awarded SMS group a sinter-plant contract for its integrated steel project at Paradip, Odisha, according to the supplier’s 20 October 2026 announcement.

The first-phase sinter installation is designed for about 5.75 million tonnes a year. This is sinter output, distinct from the wider project’s stated 13.2-million-tonne annual steel capacity.

SMS’s package covers design, engineering, equipment, electrical systems and automation. The supplier gives May 2028 as the commissioning target. The contract value is undisclosed.

Why it matters

The order moves one identifiable process package into procurement. For readers following Odisha’s steel investments, that is more useful than treating the entire development as a single announcement.

A large steel project comprises packages with separate schedules. An equipment contract provides evidence of commitment to one package; it does not by itself establish installation, successful trials or commercial production across the works.

The distinction also matters when comparing capacity figures. Sinter preparation and finished steel are different stages of the production chain, so their capacities should not be added together.

Watch next

Follow delivery, installation and trial updates for this package, then confirmation of commissioning against the supplier’s target. The documented milestone is an equipment award; installation and commissioning remain the next checkpoints.
