RBI inaugurates Bhubaneswar data centre and cybersecurity institute

The 25 October inauguration moves the Odisha facilities beyond the announced-event stage. Their detailed operating scope remains a separate question.

The Reserve Bank of India’s Data Centre and Cybersecurity Training Institute in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, were inaugurated on 25 October 2026 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister’s Office confirmed in a release published that evening.

That confirmation establishes an actual inauguration, replacing the earlier advance programme. It does not establish that every intended system has migrated to the new site or that all training programmes have begun.

Financial infrastructure behind the screen

A data centre and a training institute address different needs. Computing infrastructure supports the delivery of digital services; training develops the people who operate and protect those systems. The PMO presented the facilities as part of stronger financial-system resilience and cybersecurity capabilities.

For Odisha, the development adds a central-bank technology institution to the state’s business infrastructure. Its significance should be judged through the functions delivered, rather than an assumption that an inauguration automatically creates commercial data-centre capacity available to local companies.

Businesses increasingly depend on reliable digital financial services. That makes institutional computing and cybersecurity relevant beyond the technology sector. However, this announcement alone provides no basis for promising faster payments, fewer outages or new supplier contracts.

What remains to be established

The post-event release reviewed for this report does not provide a facility power rating, a system-by-system migration schedule or quantified local employment commitments. MIE has therefore left those figures out. The ₹169 crore estimate circulating in reporting is also excluded pending an original project-cost record.

The next useful disclosures would identify the services supported at the site, operational transition arrangements, and the institute’s training calendar and intended participants. Those details would allow a more precise assessment of what the new facilities change in practice.
