Kolkata’s Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers will build five of the Indian Navy’s eight Next Generation Corvettes. Procurement and construction milestones are the next developments to watch.
Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) signed a contract with the Ministry of Defence in New Delhi on 2 November 2026 to build five Next Generation Corvettes for the Indian Navy. GRSE puts the value of its contract at approximately ₹32,000 crore. Goa Shipyard will build the other three vessels under the broader ₹53,866.50 crore programme.
What changed for GRSE
In May 2025, GRSE disclosed that it had emerged as the lowest bidder for the five ships. The November signing turns that bidding position into a contract. The Navy designed the vessels. GRSE describes a proposed length of about 127 metres and beam of 17.6 metres. The company said it already had nine warships in production when it announced the signing.
What the Navy order means for Kolkata
GRSE reported seven operating units in Kolkata and one in Ranchi. Its manufacturing base makes the contract significant for West Bengal industry. The ₹32,000 crore represents GRSE’s shipbuilding contract value. The disclosures give no breakdown of spending by yard, supplier or district.
For marine engineering, fabrication and equipment suppliers, the practical questions are which packages GRSE will procure, when tenders open and what qualifications apply. Procurement notices will give suppliers the scope, eligibility and deadlines they need.
What to watch next
Watch for named work packages, yard allocations, first steel cutting and keel laying. Those milestones will show how the programme is progressing and which parts of the work are taking place in Eastern India.
